Career Opportunities in Private Tutoring

The career opportunities in private tutoring, whether face to face or online, are enormous.  There is a place in private tutoring for people who have strong academic background or expertise in teaching a subject which most students find difficult, e.g. Mathematics or science.  Private tutoring jobs are plentiful, and private tutoring is fast becoming a full career opportunity for a class of tutors called super tutors, by parents and students.  However, it is not easy to take up private tutoring, you need some special skills, apart from the expertise in the subject you plan to tutor, you also need good communication, some computer skills, and ability to quickly respond to questions posed by students as well as a strong stamina to go through hours of intense one to one tutoring. For people endowed with some of these skills the career opportunities in private tutoring are very lucrative.

Let us first look at the concept of private tutoring.  Private tutoring is intense one to one in-depth help to one student on a specific subject, topic or preparation for a competitive entrance examination, like SAT, LSAT or GMAT, etc. Private tutoring can be done face to face or online.  Depending on the hours you can set aside in a day or a week you can decide how many students you can take up or whether you need to opt for face to face or online tutoring.  There are opportunities in private tutoring whether you are an undergraduate student, an academician or a person with expertise in one subject or other.  Your expertise in the subject you are going to teach is the main criteria

The other skills you need to succeed in private tutoring jobs are good communication, interpersonal and computer skills.  You may as well ask why I need interpersonal and communication skills for private tutoring jobs.  You need good communication skills because you first have to convince the parents of the child that you would be able to help their child to cross over the hurdle of mastering a subject adequately.  Secondly, you also need to convince the student that you would help him or her to understand a subject thoroughly.  Occasionally, you may get a student who does not want to study or feels that he is hopeless in understanding a topic or a subject and you need to reassure the student that with sufficient hard work and help there is a possibility of going over a rough patch and improving his or her grades.

If you have good interpersonal, communication skills, expertise in a subject and an open mind to change teaching methodologies to suit requirements of a student than you will find good opportunities as a private tutor.  One thing you have to keep in mind is that your reputation depends on words of mouth and you need patience, perseverance and expertise to create the image of a good private tutor.  If you are able to master these skills, than you can demand high rate per hour and work anywhere in the world.
